Leather boots
Cleaning leather boots is important if you want them to
last and stay in good shape. But, it is important that you clean them
in the right way. If you do not, you may end up doing more harm than
good.
There are two kinds of leather boots that you might want to clean –
finished and unfinished. Here are instructions on how to do both of
these:
Finished
Place a very small amount of some kind of a moisturizing soap on a
damp cloth. Dove might be a good choice, because the soap needs to be
gentle. Work with the soap and the cloth until you are able to bring
it to a lather.
After you have worked up the lather to the right amount, you are going
to want to take the damp cloth and then begin to rub it on the leather
of the boot. It is important that you are careful not to put too much
water on the leather.
You then will need to wipe away the lather with another damp cloth
that you have not yet used. It is important that you remember that you
should not rinse the leather in water.
Once this step has been completed, the next simply includes polishing
the leather with a towel that is dry and not damp at all.
The last step to treating finished leather is to simply treat it with
a leather conditioner after it has dried completely.
Unfinished leather
The process for unfinished leather is just a little bit different:
First of all, you should use a damp cloth or a damp sponge to rub saddle
soap into the leather boots. You are going to work this up into a light
lather.
The next thing that you are going to need to do is wipe away the lather
and then allow it to air dry.
Lastly, you will need to oil the leather with some kind of a leather
preservative -- such as mink oil.
If you follow all of these steps, you will be able to keep your leather
boots clean and in good shape.
